The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has urged Nigerians to use only approved channels for National Identification Number (NIN) enrolment and related services, warning that bypassing official procedures could expose applicants to fraud and other challenges.

In a post shared via X on Monday, October 26, 2026, the commission said many of the difficulties people encounter with their NIN may stem from cutting corners or failing to follow its official enrolment procedures.

“Many of the challenges people encounter with their National Identification Number (NIN) may arise from cutting corners or failing to follow the official enrolment procedures provided by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC),” the commission stated.

NIMC urged applicants and existing NIN holders to obtain information and access services through authorised channels.

“For accurate and reliable information, visit the official NIMC website at nimc.gov.ng or follow its verified social media handles,” it said.

The commission also cautioned Nigerians against patronising illegal operators and warned against extortion in the process of obtaining NIN-related services.

“Say NO to extortion. Do not encourage or patronise illegal operators,” the post added.

It further advised the public to remain vigilant, verify information and use authorised channels to protect their personal identity details.

“Don’t fall victim to fraud!” the commission warned.
