Aston Villa were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Fulham at Villa Park after goalkeeper Zion Suzuki’s costly second-half error denied Unai Emery’s side all three points in their Premier League encounter on Saturday.

Nicolas Jackson gave Villa the lead in the first half, but an unfortunate mistake from Suzuki allowed Fulham to restore parity, ensuring both sides shared the points.

Villa had an early opportunity to take the lead in the 15th minute after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review awarded them a penalty for handball against Fulham midfielder Sander Berge.

Berge was penalised after the ball struck his hand during an aerial challenge with Leon Goretzka inside the penalty area. However, Villa captain John McGinn failed to capitalise on the opportunity, sending his spot-kick against the crossbar.

The hosts continued to push forward, with Goretzka influential in midfield, but Fulham also threatened on the counter-attack.

In the 32nd minute, Fulham nearly broke the deadlock when Oscar Bobb found himself with a clear opportunity, only for Suzuki to produce an excellent one-handed save to keep the visitors at bay.

Villa eventually took the lead in the 39th minute through Jackson, who demonstrated excellent individual quality to put his side ahead.

The Chelsea loanee was picked out by Johan Manzambi following an error from Timothy Castagne, before working his way past Fulham’s defence and calmly slotting the ball beyond goalkeeper Bernd Leno.

The goal was Jackson’s eighth of the season and continued his impressive scoring form, having found the net five times in his previous five Premier League appearances.

Villa went into the interval with a 1-0 advantage, but Fulham returned for the second half with greater attacking intent.

The visitors almost equalised within three minutes of the restart when Antonee Robinson delivered a dangerous ball across the Villa goal, which Suzuki managed to divert away.

Fulham continued to apply pressure, with Gonzalo García and Shea Charles both missing opportunities to draw their side level.

Villa also threatened to extend their advantage, as Alysson and Ian Maatsen tested Leno with efforts that required the Fulham goalkeeper’s attention.

However, the visitors’ persistence eventually paid off in the 64th minute through an unfortunate mistake from Suzuki.

The Japanese goalkeeper failed to hold Alex Iwobi’s corner kick, allowing the ball to slip through his hands and cross the goal line for an own goal that brought Fulham back into the contest.

Iwobi’s delivery caused problems inside the Villa penalty area, and Suzuki’s inability to deal with the cross proved costly for the hosts.

Fulham subsequently grew in confidence and continued to threaten, with Suzuki recovering from his mistake to make another important save from an Iwobi header before García’s follow-up effort was deflected behind.

Villa manager Unai Emery responded with substitutions, introducing Emiliano Buendía, Ibrahim Mbaye and João Gomes in an attempt to regain control of the encounter.

Both teams pushed for a winner in the closing stages, with Villa applying late pressure.

Pau Torres came close to restoring Villa’s advantage with two headed opportunities, but neither found the target as Fulham’s defence held firm.

Despite their late efforts, Villa were unable to find a decisive goal, with the encounter ending 1-1.

Aston Villa will now turn their attention to Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League encounter against Barcelona at Camp Nou.
