By Kabirat Kahinde — Some Nigerians on social media have faulted the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for allegedly using Artificial Intelligence-generated images in voter records.
INEC had on Monday published a preliminary voter register on its official website, following concerns over the non-release of the records a few months before the 2027 elections.
After the release, many Nigerians took to their social media handles and criticised the electoral umpire for using mismatched images and names.
The controversy gained attention after X users shared screenshots of voter records from polling units in Ward 11, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State, questioning the authenticity of the photographs.
Similar concerns were also raised about records in Esan Central Local Government Area of the state.
Calling on the commission to explain the presence of the images, X user Decosule (@SuleDeco) demanded explanations about the photographs and how they were included in the records.
He said: “Dear @inecnigeria, can you explain why you have AI-generated images on the INEC Register in polling units in Ward 11, Etsako West LG, Edo State? We want an explanation.

”Who infused AI-generated images in the register? Who did the capturing? Who collected their PVCs, if they have been collected? We want answers!!!!!”
Expressing suspicion over the images, another X user, Elle (@sweetsixtien), alleged that the suspected AI-generated photographs could have been the reason the voters register was withheld from the public.
She linked the controversy to alleged corruption involving President Bola Tinubu, Dayo Prado and the APC.
“INEC want to burn the country! It explains WHY Tinubu, Dayo Prado & APC gang are LOOTING away like there’s no tomorrow; they know they are going to exile at this rate. AI-generated photos…explains why they were hiding the register! ” she wrote.
Questioning the authenticity of the entries, another X user, Mayor of Etsako (@bryma_007), expressed doubts about the names appearing in the register.
Mr Mayor wrote, “And the names are not even proper Edo names, not to talk of being Etsako. Omo!!!”
Meanwhile, INEC had yet to publicly address the specific allegations concerning the suspected AI-generated photographs.
However, the commission said in a statement issued on Monday that it was processing claims and objections arising from the preliminary voters’ register.
