The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) is seeking a partnership with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to decentralise its online registration process and enable prospective corps members to register from anywhere in the world.

The initiative is expected to eliminate the need for foreign-trained graduates to travel to Nigeria for registration and reduce the long queues at designated cybercafés during mobilisation exercises.

NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, disclosed this during a visit to the NIMC Director-General and Chief Executive Officer, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, in Abuja.

Nafiu said the Scheme planned to develop an application that would allow prospective corps members to complete their registration using personal devices, without having to visit cybercafés.

He identified biometric capturing as one of the major challenges to achieving the objective, expressing confidence that NIMC could provide the necessary support through its national
identity database.

The NYSC chief said the collaboration would enable the Scheme to verify the identities of prospective corps members while simplifying the registration process.

He also commended NIMC for its efforts to ensure that Nigerians have verifiable identities and offered the Scheme’s support towards achieving the Commission’s objectives.

Nafiu expressed optimism that the next NYSC online registration exercise would be conducted seamlessly, allowing prospective corps members to register from the comfort of their homes.

In her response, Coker-Odusote pledged NIMC’s support for the initiative, saying eligible Nigerian youths would be able to access registration services through a more convenient digital platform.

She explained that Nigerians with National Identification Numbers (NIN) who download the NINAuth application would be able to complete their registration processes remotely.

The NIMC chief added that the digital identity platform could also support registration and verification for examinations and other services, including WAEC, JAMB, NECO, NYSC and international travel.

She commended the NYSC Director-General for the initiative and assured him of the Commission’s commitment to a productive partnership with the Scheme.

The proposed collaboration is part of efforts to leverage digital identity infrastructure to improve public service delivery and make NYSC mobilisation more accessible to eligible graduates.
