A police department in the United States has attracted widespread attention on social media after jokingly inviting cocaine buyers who have been short-changed by their dealers to file official complaints.

The Greensboro Police Department in North Carolina posted the message on its official X account, writing: “If your cocaine dealer shorted you and didn’t supply you with the full amount of product, contact us at 336-373-2222 to file an official complaint.”

The tongue-in-cheek post triggered a flood of reactions, with users praising the department’s social media team for its humour and others questioning the unusual approach to public engagement.

The department maintained the joke through its replies to users, responding to one person who claimed to have called the number only to be answered by the same people who allegedly short-changed him.

“You get their name?” the police account asked.

In another exchange, a user challenged the department to prove that the post was not generated by artificial intelligence. The account responded by asking for an iced coffee to be placed on the desk in the image.

Other users joined in with mock complaints about drug transactions, asking whether the police offered refunds, exchanges or compensation for previous short deliveries.

One user joked about ordering three bricks of drugs and receiving only one, while another asked whether the department could recover money lost in a failed transaction.

The post also attracted criticism from some users, who argued that a police department should maintain a more serious public image and focus on its core responsibilities.

However, many applauded the department’s ability to use humour to engage the public, with one commenter describing the post and its replies as among the funniest things they had seen on X.

The exchanges have since turned the post into a viral social media moment, with users continuing to share jokes about customer complaints in the illegal drug trade.

The department’s post was clearly framed as humour, rather than a formal invitation to report drug-related complaints through a special service.
