Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has appeared to question Michael Carrick’s tactical decisions after the Red Devils suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Como.
ESPN reported the comments on X, with Fernandes expressing concerns about United’s decision not to press Como man-to-man and the space the Italian side were allowed to exploit.
“It’s a decision from the staff not to press man-to-man and sometimes leave space behind and try to get the ball, wait for them, but sometimes when you give space to these teams, they get confidence.
“That’s on the manager and staff to see, not me. Sometimes you have to be more brave under pressure, take the risk of pressing high and making them uncomfortable.

“As you saw with them, their centre-back was coming to mark me in my own half. We need to do that as a team, but we were not able to.
“A team that plays through the middle with small connections; if you give them too much time and space, then they can hurt you out wide.”
The Portugal international argued that United needed to take more risks by pressing higher up the pitch and making their opponents uncomfortable rather than allowing them time and space to build attacks.
Fernandes also highlighted Como’s pressing approach, noting that one of their centre-backs followed him into his own half, while Manchester United were unable to apply similar pressure as a team.
He stressed that decisions on the team’s tactical approach were the responsibility of the manager and coaching staff, but his comments appeared to highlight United’s shortcomings in their approach to the match.
Como’s 4-1 victory handed Manchester United a heavy defeat, with Fernandes’ post-match remarks drawing attention to the tactical issues that contributed to the result.
