The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, has cautioned against what he described as simplistic analysis of Nigeria’s economy, insisting that a margin discount should not be misconstrued as a subsidy.

Oyedele said public discussions on economic policies must be guided by facts and a proper understanding of the complexities of the national economy.

“A national economy is complex. We cannot manage it on the basis of shallow analysis and simplistic conclusions,” he said.

“To describe a margin discount as a subsidy is to distort the facts and misinform the public. We must elevate the quality of our national discourse.”

The minister’s remarks underscore the need for clear distinctions between different economic and pricing mechanisms in assessing government policies.

His statement also comes amid continued public scrutiny of economic decisions and their implications for businesses, government revenue and the cost of living.
