Doubts over the qualification of some governorship and house of assembly candidates, sparked by the recent ruling of the Supreme Court, are expected to be cleared today when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) releases its final list of the eligible contestants.


The apex court had, in the September 24, 2026 ruling , affirmed the constitutionality of Sections 77(5), 77(6) and 77(7) of the Electoral Act 2026 and upheld INEC’s revised timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections.

THE Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that political parties that fielded candidates whose names were not on the membership registers submitted to the commission will not be allowed to contest in the 2027 general elections.
INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee (IVEC), Mohammed Kudu Haruna, disclosed this on Trust TV’s Daily Politics programme on Wednesday evening.
Haruna said the commission would take a final decision on the implications of the Supreme Court judgment by next week, noting that public anxiety has increased following the ruling.
“Depending on circumstances, hopefully, we will definitely meet next week to be able to take a decision on this, because I know a lot of people are anxious, not just candidates themselves; even public are anxious. They want to know, given what way Supreme Court has strengthened our hands,” he said.

The 20 prospective corps members released by suspected kidnappers on Wednesday have reportedly been offered postings to any of the six South-West states.
A parent, who spoke to Saturday PUNCH in confidence on Friday, said the survivors were allowed to choose the states where they would continue their national service.
“They have been given the opportunity to choose states in the South-West to continue their service with the current batch,” she said.

The importation of illicit drugs concealed in used vehicles and automobile spare parts has come under scrutiny following the interception of two 40-foot containers containing suspected narcotics worth an estimated ₦3.67 billion at Tin Can Island Port, Lagos.
The seizure was made by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Tin Can Island Port Command, in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The seized substances included Delta-8 cannabis-infused cookies and gummies, which were allegedly hidden among imported used vehicles and automobile spare parts to evade detection.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Oscar Ivara, disclosed the interceptions in a statement issued on Friday, attributing the operation to the vigilance of Customs officers and cooperation with the NDLEA.
According to Ivara, the first consignment, concealed in a 40-foot container with identification number MSDU655132/0, was intercepted on September 2, 2026.
“Following a thorough 100 per cent joint physical examination conducted by both agencies, it was found to contain a total of 890 packs of Delta-8 cannabis-infused cookies and gummies, with a combined weight of 598.08 kilograms, alongside two used vehicles, namely a 2008 Mercedes-Benz and a 2012 Nissan Infiniti,” Ivara said.
