IGP Disu Appoints Awu Fidelis Jonah Head Of Police Complaint Response Unit

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu has appointed SP Awu Fidelis Jonah as the substantive Head of the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) of the Nigeria Police Force.

The appointment is aimed at strengthening accountability, improving responses to public complaints and boosting confidence in the police complaint-management system.

The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, October 9, 2026.

According to the statement, Awu has experience in public complaints management, criminal investigation, supervision, leadership and international peacekeeping.

He previously served as a pioneer member of the CRU, where he held various responsibilities before becoming the unit’s Second-in-Command.

His experience in the unit covers complaint handling, call-centre operations, supervision, citizen engagement and institutional accountability.

The statement said Disu had charged the new CRU head to maintain professionalism, ensure prompt responses to complaints and respect the human rights of members of the public.

The IGP also urged him to ensure that complaints against police personnel were handled transparently and in line with established procedures.

Awu holds a Higher National Diploma from the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa; a Postgraduate Diploma in Crime Management and a Master’s degree in Criminal Justice System from Kaduna State University. He also holds a Master’s degree in Security and Strategic Studies from the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna.

He is a graduate of the Advanced Detective Course 67 at the Police Staff College, Jos, and has undergone human rights and professional policing training.

Between 2022 and 2023, he served as Deputy Contingent Commander of Formed Police Unit Contingent 11 in Mogadishu, Somalia.

The police said the appointment forms part of efforts to strengthen its internal accountability mechanisms and promote professional, rights-respecting and people-centred policing.

“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to strengthening internal accountability mechanisms, improving responsiveness to public concerns and promoting professional, rights-respecting and people-centred policing,” the statement added.
