Nigerian Army troops operating under Operation UDO KA have uncovered and exhumed the remains of a community leader allegedly murdered by a criminal gang in Imo State, following intelligence obtained from a suspect in custody.
The Army said troops of the 34 Artillery Brigade, participating in Operation EASTERN SANITY II, recovered the remains of Chief Ibe Anyadu of Aggah Community from a shallow grave in Umudike Forest on Saturday.
According to the Army, the breakthrough followed the recent arrest of suspects linked to the killing of a soldier and the theft of military weapons. During interrogation, one of the suspects allegedly confessed to participating in Chief Anyadu’s murder and led troops to the burial site.
The remains were exhumed in the presence of the deceased’s family, vigilante members from Ohaji/Egbema Local Government Area, and representatives of the Aggah and Umudike communities.
The family provided a coffin and an ambulance to convey the remains for burial in accordance with local customs.
Commander of Joint Task Force South-East, Operation UDO KA, Major General Oluremi Ayobami Fadairo, expressed condolences to the bereaved family and assured them that those responsible would face justice.
“We assure the family and the people of Aggah Community that justice will be served, as the suspects will be prosecuted in accordance with the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Fadairo said.
The Army said it remains committed to dismantling criminal networks in the South-East and urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to support ongoing security operations.
