TikTok denies restricting service in Northern Nigeria

Social networking service TikTok, has denied restricting access to its platform in parts of Northern Nigeria,  saying the disruption was not imposed by the platform.

TikTok’s Head of Communications for Sub-Saharan Africa, Keagile Makgoba, said this in a statement on Monday, amid reports of difficulties accessing the service.

Makgoba said the company was engaging relevant stakeholders to resolve the reported access difficulties.

“We can confirm that this restriction was not implemented by TikTok,” she said.

She added that the company remained committed to ensuring access for its communities.

The company’s response comes after weeks of complaints from users in Kaduna, Kano, Kebbi and Sokoto states, some of whom reported that they could only access the platform by using virtual private networks (VPNs).
